Recap

In a commanding performance, Malta triumphed over Armenia with a final score of 57-39 in their 5-7th place classification game at this year’s FIBA U18 Women’s Eurobasket Division C. The victory was a result of a balanced and tactical approach, highlighting Malta’s strength on both ends of the court on the day.

From the outset, Malta’s starting lineup made a strong impression. A highlight for Malta was the performance of Sarah Fenech Pace, who excelled in both scoring and defending as the team’s top scorer and rebounder with a double-double of 18 points and 14 rebounds. She delivered important assists and made crucial layups that helped widen Malta’s lead while her rebounding also played a significant role in limiting Armenia’s second-chance opportunities.

The Maltese team’s defensive strategy was particularly effective. Malta’s defenders managed to neutralise several of Armenia’s key players, including Lia Krumian and Sona Karapetyan, who were unable to significantly impact the game despite their efforts. Malta’s ability to disrupt Armenia’s offensive flow was evident through several key steals and turnovers.

Lia Krumian, one of Armenia’s starting five, did manage to score and contribute defensively, but her efforts were not enough to overcome Malta’s defensive prowess and efficient scoring. The Armenian team faced difficulties with their shooting accuracy, including missed three-pointers that could have shifted the momentum.

Malta’s substitutions also played a strategic role in maintaining their lead. Players like Rebecca Fenech Pace and Michela Marmara provided fresh energy and effective contributions, further solidifying Malta’s control over the game. The strategic use of timeouts and rotations allowed Malta to keep their key players fresh and maintain their high level of performance throughout the match.

The game saw some intense moments, including several critical missed shots and turnovers from both teams. However, Malta’s consistent scoring and defensive resilience proved decisive. Despite Armenia’s efforts to mount a comeback, Malta’s effective game plan and execution led them to a comfortable victory.

This win give Roderick Vella’s clan the chance to go for fifth place with a clash against Georgia pencilled in for Sunday.
