Recap
In the 5th-6th place classification game at this year’s FIBA U18 Women’s Eurobasket Division C, Malta fell just short against Georgia, ending the contest with a narrow 61-56 loss. Despite the setback, the Maltese team, under the guidance of coach Roderick Vella, showcased remarkable resilience and skill, ultimately finishing sixth in the tournament.
From the outset, Georgia took the lead, closing the first quarter at 20-13. Malta’s defence, however, demonstrated their potential with strong performances from key players like Anna Fenech Pace and Sarah Fenech Pace.
The second quarter saw Malta struggling to close the gap, with the half ending 36-21 in favour of Georgia. Turnovers and missed opportunities plagued the Maltese, but their fighting spirit remained undiminished.
The third quarter highlighted Malta’s determination. Despite Georgia extending their lead to 49-38 by the end of the period, Malta’s Vanya Baldacchino and Michela Marmara made significant contributions, keeping the hope of a comeback alive. Sarah Fenech Pace’s defensive rebounds and key plays by Jada Said also helped push Malta’s momentum.
The final quarter was a thrilling display of Malta’s grit. Malta mounted a strong comeback attempt, driven by Baldacchino’s crucial free throws and layups, and strategic assists from Marmara and Said. The team’s aggressive play and strategic manoeuvres brought them within striking distance of Georgia. However, crucial turnovers and missed free throws in the final moments thwarted their efforts to secure a victory.
Despite the loss, the game was a testament to Malta’s competitive spirit and potential. Coach Vella’s team exhibited a commendable performance throughout the tournament. Malta’s defence, led by Gwen Carabott and supported by Philippa Riolo, played a crucial role in keeping the scoreline close. Offensively, the efforts of Sarah Fenech Pace and Baldacchino were instrumental in maintaining pressure on Georgia.
With this result, Malta concludes their campaign in the FIBA U18 Women’s Eurobasket Division C in sixth place.
