Recap

Depiro secured a hard-fought 86-84 win over Valletta in a thrilling encounter in the John Tabone Shield. The game was a rollercoaster from start to finish, with both teams making scoring runs, but it was Depiro’s resilience, led by Chase Barrs and Dominic Tomasi, that saw them edge out their rivals in the final seconds.

The first quarter saw Valletta take control early, with Lorenzo Anderson and Piotr Stelmach leading the charge. Anderson quickly made his mark with a fast break dunk, and Stelmach added a three-pointer to push Valletta ahead 7-2. Barrs kept Depiro in the game, hitting a three-pointer and later tipping in a layup to level the score at 7-7. However, Valletta capitalised on turnovers and second-chance points, with Eric Terry proving a force in the paint. By the end of the quarter, Valletta held a narrow 25-20 lead, thanks to a late three-pointer from Anderson.

Depiro started the second quarter with intent, clawing their way back with free throws and quick points off turnovers. Miguel Brincat and Tomasi were pivotal in swinging the momentum, with Tomasi’s layup giving Depiro a 31-30 lead. Depiro extended their advantage to 35-30 after a series of free throws from Barrs. Valletta, however, fought back through Anderson and Terry, with Stelmach adding another crucial three-pointer. Despite a late push from Barrs, Valletta ended the half slightly ahead, 47-44.

The third quarter saw a shift in momentum as Depiro found their rhythm. Tomasi hit an early three-pointer to level the score, and Brincat and Cameron Cornelius combined to push Depiro ahead 55-49. Anderson kept Valletta in the game with back-to-back baskets, but Depiro’s defence held firm. Brincat’s three-point shooting and Bozovic’s strong play inside saw Depiro close the quarter with a 71-62 lead.

The fourth quarter was a tense affair, with Valletta launching a comeback. Anderson was instrumental, hitting crucial layups and free throws, while Vasovic’s inside presence cut the deficit to just one point at 84-83 with 1.20 remaining. However, Depiro’s David Bugeja came through, scoring a fast break layup in the final minute to secure the 86-84 victory.
