Recap

Valletta faced Hibernians in an intense clash in the John Tabone Shield, with Hibernians emerging victorious 92-75, thanks to stellar performances from Derek Brown and Tedrick Wolfe.

The opening quarter saw Valletta strike first with Lorenzo Anderson’s fastbreak layup, but Hibernians quickly responded through Brown’s sharp shooting, including a smooth jump shot to tie the game early on. Hibernians gained momentum when Wolfe hit a three-pointer, followed by a reverse layup. Valletta’s Anderson tried to keep them within reach, consistently finding the basket, but Brown’s tip-in layup and Ivan Demcesen’s fast-break efforts extended Hibernians’ lead. A late-quarter three by Brown widened the gap to 29-18 by the buzzer.

In the second quarter, Valletta clawed their way back with Nicholas Grech knocking down back-to-back threes, trimming the deficit to four points. However, Hibernians’ Demcesen was dominant in the paint, responding with consecutive layups to keep Valletta at bay. Piotr Stelmach added key points for Valletta, converting a layup and a free throw to bring the score to 33-38. As Valletta closed in, Hibernians relied on Brown and Matthew Gouder to preserve their advantage, leading 50-40 at halftime.

The third quarter saw Valletta’s Eric Terry get involved, converting a second-chance layup and free throws to chip away at the lead. Anderson continued his hot form, floating in a jumper to bring Valletta within five points at 47-52. However, Hibernians pulled away again with Wolfe and Demcesen scoring in quick succession, including a highlight-reel dunk from Wolfe. Despite Valletta’s resilience, Hibernians maintained control, ending the quarter with a 66-55 lead.

Valletta made a spirited push in the final quarter. Stelmach’s reverse layup and Anderson’s fast-break efforts cut the lead to seven points at 65-72. Yet, Hibernians’ composure shone through, with Brown hitting free throws and Wolfe sealing the deal with a clutch three-pointer. As time wound down, Gouder’s turnaround jumper and fast-break layup capped a dominant performance, leaving Valletta unable to close the gap. The final score stood at 92-75 in favour of Hibernians, with Brown finishing with 26 points and Wolfe adding 25, leading their team to a convincing win.
