Recap

With Betsson Depiro and Valletta BC facing off in the Women’s John Tabone Shield, the first quarter saw an aggressive start from Depiro, with Julia Borg quickly getting on the scoreboard through a free throw and a crucial three-pointer, pushing her team to a 4-1 lead. Claire Ciantar then capitalised on a layup inside the paint to extend the gap to 6-1. Valletta’s Milica Stefanovic managed to respond with a driving layup, but Depiro continued to assert dominance, particularly through Borg’s impeccable shooting. A three-point effort from Hayley Grixti narrowed the margin to one point, 8-7, but Depiro’s Borg remained in excellent form, converting another three-pointer. By the end of the quarter, Depiro led 19-17, despite a persistent challenge from Valletta’s Janae Barnes, who added eight points in quick succession.

The second quarter started closely, with Valletta inching closer after Marija Momcilovic’s free throw. Depiro’s Borg continued her hot streak, driving the team forward with a three-pointer and a mid-range jump shot, bringing her total to 11 points at this stage. Barnes, however, kept Valletta competitive, scoring consistently from the freethrow line and in the paint, closing the gap to just a point. Depiro’s quick transition play was crucial, with Julia Borg Xerri and Kristy Galea both converting fast breaks. The quarter ended with another clutch shot from Borg, allowing Depiro to hold a slim 36-33 lead at the half.

Depiro came out firing in the third quarter, extending their lead through an early jumper from Borg and a fast-break three-pointer by Galea. Valletta’s Stefanovic and Aleksandra Nikishina attempted to respond, but Depiro continued to capitalise on turnovers. Borg added another six points through turnovers, while Borg Xerri chipped in with key layups. Despite a late push from Barnes, Depiro closed the quarter with a commanding 63-48 lead after a final three-pointer from Galea.

In the fourth quarter, Depiro further consolidated their dominance. Borg continued her stellar performance, finishing with 25 points, while fastbreaks from Magri and Ciantar widened the gap to over 20 points. Valletta’s Barnes fought valiantly, contributing 24 points by the final buzzer, but the game was firmly in Depiro’s control.
