Recap
Caffe Moak Luxol edged past Starlites in the final first-round fixture of this season’s Women’s John Tabone Shield. and Starlites battled fiercely in the fixture, with both teams exchanging blows early in the first quarter. Starlites’ Michela Zammit Cordina opened the scoring with a driving layup and free throw, quickly giving her team a 3-0 lead. Luxol’s Sarah Pace answered with a floating jump shot, keeping Luxol within striking distance. Makaila Napoleon added to Starlites’ tally with a layup, while Lisa Fenech Pace’s fast break layup levelled the score at 6-6. As the quarter progressed, both sides struggled to break free, but Luxol nudged ahead 12-9 by the end of the first, thanks to a late layup by Sarah Fenech Pace.
The second quarter saw both teams exchange baskets, with Starlites’ Catherine Cilia sinking two free throws to keep the pressure on. Napoleon’s steady scoring tied the game at 12-12 before Fenech Pace gave Luxol the lead again. However, a crucial three-pointer from Sasha Lecuyer and an outside jumpshot from Zammit Cordina powered Starlites ahead, 17-14. Luxol’s Brandy Lynn Huffhines responded with a fast-break layup and an extra point from the line to reclaim a slender lead. Cilia’s three-pointer shifted the momentum back to Starlites, and Zammit Cordina’s continued accuracy helped extend their lead to 33-28 by half-time, capped off by a jump shot from Napoleon.
Luxol came out strong in the third quarter, starting with Huffhines’ jumper and Lisa Fenech Pace’s layup, reducing the deficit to just three points. A timely three-pointer from Pace tied the game at 35-35. Napoleon and Mikela Riolo briefly regained the lead for Starlites, but Luxol surged forward with a scoring run, including a second-chance jumper from Pace and a fast-break three from Huffhines, pushing them to a 51-41 advantage by the end of the quarter.
In the final quarter, Starlites showed resilience as Lecuyer drained back-to-back three-pointers, cutting the gap to six points. Huffhines and Vanya Baldacchino responded quickly, keeping Luxol’s lead intact with a series of fast-break plays. Despite Napoleon’s persistence and Lecuyer’s late-game contributions, Luxol’s defensive play held firm. In the final seconds, Anna Fenech Pace’s clutch free throws sealed a hard-fought 72-64 victory for Luxol, highlighting their ability to capitalise on turnovers and maintain composure in key moments.
