Recap
Hibernians clinched a hard-fought victory over Starlites in the Women’s John Tabone Shield semifinals on Saturday at the Ta’ Qali Pavilion.
Starlites’ Makaila Napoleon struck first with a layup, setting the tone for a competitive opening quarter. Hibernians’ Mikayla Brandon answered soon after, driving into the paint to tie the score at 2-2. Brandon stayed in great form with a fast-break layup to put Hibernians ahead, but Napoleon’s three-pointer moments later saw Starlites regain a slim lead. The two teams exchanged baskets in a back-and-forth first quarter that ended with Starlites slightly ahead, 18-16, thanks to a late drive from Sasha Lecuyer.
The second quarter saw Hibernians push back as Maria Bonett found her rhythm, earning several points at the free-throw line. Starlites’ Michela Zammit Cordina landed a three-pointer to maintain their edge, but Hibernians soon took control as Steffi de Martino led a quick 6-0 run, capped off by Andie Saliba’s fast-break layup. With this, Hibernians held their largest lead of the game at 29-23, setting a defensive tone that helped them close the quarter up by 31-26.
Starlites returned in the third quarter with an impressive offensive stretch. Lecuyer and Riolo each hit crucial three-pointers, and Zammit Cordina’s finesse inside helped push Starlites ahead 37-31. Hibernians, however, were not to be outdone. Brandon and De Martino combined forces, with De Martino capitalising on turnovers to bring the game level. Eventually, Lecuyer’s three-pointer at 00:31 gave Starlites a narrow 49-48 lead entering the final quarter.
The fourth quarter belonged to Hibernians as they displayed both patience and precision. Brandon’s persistence inside the paint paid off with a series of put-backs, helping Hibernians reclaim the lead.
A string of free throws from Saliba and Bonett extended the lead, and Brandon’s dominance in the final minute sealed Starlites’ fate. She tipped in a final layup with 33 seconds left, and a pair of free throws stretched the lead to eight, securing Hibernians’ spot in the final with a 61-53 win.
