Recap

Starlites JSD secured an emphatic victory over AtoZ Athleta in a BOV division One fixture defined by relentless offensive pressure and standout individual performances. Joe Davis led the charge for Starlites, finishing with an impressive 34 points, supported by Trevon Reddish-Rhone and Matthew Scerri.

Athleta started brightly, with Juan Garcia Cefai hitting consecutive three-pointers to give them an early 6-2 lead. However, Davis quickly responded for Starlites, showcasing his scoring prowess with a series of layups and jump shots. By the end of the first quarter, Davis had already accumulated 14 points, with Starlites holding a 28-22 advantage.

In the second quarter, Starlites extended their lead with a balanced attack. Max Curran added eight points, including a turnaround three-pointer, while Reddish-Rhone and Davis capitalised on turnovers to widen the gap. Former Starlites big man Kurt James kept Athleta in the contest with timely three-pointers and free throws, but Starlites’ dominance in transition play saw them take a commanding 53-34 lead into halftime.

The third quarter was more of the same, as Starlites continued to pile on the points. Scerri came alive with crucial three-pointers and fast-break layups, contributing to a 27-point lead midway through the period. Athleta struggled to find a rhythm offensively, with James and Caleb Matthews providing rare bright spots. Curran’s thunderous dunk near the end of the quarter symbolised Starlites’ dominance as they entered the final quarter ahead 79-53.

In the fourth quarter, Athleta mounted a spirited comeback attempt. Maxwell Amoafo was a force inside, scoring consistently on second chances and fast breaks, while Matthews added a string of layups to reduce the deficit. Despite their efforts, Starlites remained composed, with Davis and Reddish-Rhone combining for crucial free throws to maintain their lead. Late three-pointers from Miguel Fabri sealed the game, ensuring Starlites crossed the 100-point mark.
