Recap

Luxol Sherries Estates rebounded strongly from their midweek setback with an impressive victory over AtoZ Athleta, maintaining control throughout the game. Athleta struggled to recover after falling behind by ten points at the end of the first quarter, despite Caleb Matthews standing out for the losing side by posting a season-high 33 points.

The game opened with Darron Howard igniting Luxol’s offence with a three-pointer, setting the tone early. Despite a fast-break layup from Juan Cefai Garcia to respond, Luxol built momentum with Howard and Stefan Cappello scoring back-to-back fast-break baskets. Athleta attempted to stay close through Kurt James’s scoring inside, but Luxol’s transition play, particularly Howard’s three-point shooting and Caleb Jones-McCrary’s emphatic dunk, extended the lead to 23-13 by the quarter’s end.

Sandro Farrugia’s Athleta clan looked for a lifeline in the second quarter, with Maxwell Amoafo and Matthews stepping up offensively. Matthews’s fadeaway jumpers and three-point shooting reduced the deficit, but Luxol’s bench ensured the pressure stayed on. Cappello’s sharp finishing in the paint and Howard’s consistent scoring helped the Violets extend their advantage to 42-32 by halftime.

Luxol resumed control in the third quarter, with Howard hitting another three-pointer in the opening seconds. Cappello and Jones McCrary dominated the offensive glass, converting second-chance opportunities into points. Athleta relied heavily on Matthews, who sank two quick three-pointers and continued to attack the rim effectively. However, Luxol’s depth shone through as Nenad Bukva and Vukasin Jandric added crucial points to keep the lead intact at 68-53 heading into the final rubber.

The fourth quarter saw Duncan Fenech’s Luxol solidify their dominance. Howard, scoring in transition, surpassed 30 points for the game, while Jones McCrary and Cappello continued to control the paint. Despite Matthews’s continued brilliance, Athleta’s comeback hopes faded as Luxol closed out the game decisively, securing victory.
