Recap

Valletta Lions continued their fine form on Sunday with a decisive victory over Hibernians, their second in as many games this week, while handing the league leaders their second consecutive loss. The clash was marked by Valletta’s balanced scoring as Piotr Stelmach, Nikola Vasovic, and Eric Terry each surpassed the 20-point mark, outshining Hibernians’ Derek Brown, who led his side with 22 points.

The game began with Ivan Demcesen giving Hibernians an early lead with a composed jumper, but Eric Terry quickly responded with a jumpshot for Valletta. Hibernians capitalised on second-chance opportunities, with Demcesen and Tedrick Wolfe converting inside, but Valletta soon gained control. Stelmach’s shooting, including a key three-pointer, and Vasovic’s versatility sparked a 12-0 run that pushed Valletta ahead 21-12 by the end of the first quarter.

Valletta maintained their intensity in the second quarter. Stelmach opened with another three-ball, while Terry dominated in the paint, converting several turnovers into points. Vasovic’s jumpshots, paired with Francesco Mifsud Bonnici’s crafty finishes, kept Valletta in command. Hibernians attempted to rally through Matthew Gouder’s inside scoring, but Valletta’s discipline ensured a 42-26 lead at halftime.

Hibernians began the third quarter aggressively, with Brown leading a spirited comeback. His quick scoring, including a three-pointer and a fast-break floater, trimmed the deficit to single digits. Wolfe and Demcesen added valuable points in transition, but Valletta responded with Vasovic’s three-pointer and Terry’s consistent finishing which steadied the ship, restoring a double-digit lead. Despite Brown’s late scoring flurry, Valletta held a 52-48 edge heading into the final rubber.

The fourth quarter was Valletta’s show. Stelmach and Vasovic continued to exploit Hibernians’ defensive lapses, with Stelmach’s precision around the basket proving unstoppable. Terry added crucial points at the free-throw line, while Vasovic’s fadeaway jumpers further widened the gap. Hibernians tried to claw back through Brown and Neil Cassar, but Valletta’s dominance on both ends sealed a commanding 83-69 victory.
