Recap

Hibernians returned to the win column on Sunday with a convincing victory over closest competitors Luxol Sherries Estates.

The contest unfolded with a high-energy start as Darron Howard opened the scoring with a fast-break dunk. Ivan Demcesen responded quickly for Hibernians, levelling the game with a hook shot. Luxol maintained their momentum early, with Howard adding a jump shot, but Demcesen’s precision from the line and Tedrick Wolfe’s outside shooting gave Hibernians their first lead.

Caleb Jones-McCrary stepped up for Luxol, scoring twice in the paint to tie the game at 8-8. Nathan Xuereb capitalised on a turnover to edge the Violets ahead, but Wolfe’s composure from midrange brought the Paolites back level. A late flurry from Jones-McCrary, including a free throw, gave Luxol a narrow 13-12 advantage at the end of the first quarter.

The second quarter began with Hibernians’ Luke Farrugia sinking a fast-break three-pointer, but Howard replied immediately with a three of his own.

The lead shifted several times, with Wolfe and Derek Brown making key baskets for Hibs, while Xuereb and Howard kept Luxol in contention. A series of free throws from Wolfe and Brown saw Hibernians establish a five-point lead late in the half, but Howard’s dominance in the paint narrowed the deficit to one as Hibernians led 37-36 at halftime.

The third quarter was a showcase of offensive firepower. Howard and Xuereb led Luxol’s attack, combining for several jump shots and free throws. Despite Luxol briefly taking the lead with a three-pointer from Jones McCrary, Wolfe’s three-point shooting and Demcesen’s presence in the paint kept Hibernians competitive. A late jumper from Teodor Gjurovski put Hibernians ahead 62-61 going into the final quarter.

The fourth quarter saw Luxol regain the lead with an early three-pointer from JP Schembri. However, Wolfe and Demcesen combined for a critical run, with Wolfe excelling in transition and Demcesen dominating the glass. Despite Howard’s relentless scoring, including a series of free throws, Hibernians pulled away in the closing minutes. Brown’s fast-break dunk and subsequent free throws sealed the game as Hibernians emerged victorious.
