Recap
Starlites emerged victorious in a closely contested MAPFRE MSV Life Women’s League clash on Saturday, defeating Hibernians 64-57 in a game that marked the first time Steffi De Martino and Andie Saliba faced their former team after transferring to Hibernians in the summer.
Starlites took early control, with Makaila Napoleon proving unstoppable under the rim. She opened the scoring with a tip-in layup and followed it with a free throw. Ylenia Bonett and Sasha Lecuyer extended the lead with layups and free throws to make it 6-0. Hibernians fought back, with Saliba responding with a jump shot, but Starlites maintained their momentum. Michela Zammit Cordina’s fast-break layup and a timely three-pointer by Napoleon pushed Starlites to a 16-9 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Hibernians regrouped in the second quarter, driven by Julija Dabic’s strength in the paint. Her three successive layups gave Hibernians their first lead at 17-16. Starlites replied through free throws from Napoleon and a crucial three-pointer by Zammit Cordina to tie the game at 20-20. A late hook shot from Napoleon restored Starlites’ lead, but Kaya Calleja’s buzzer-beater ensured a 22-22 deadlock at halftime.
The third quarter saw a thrilling exchange of baskets. A Saliba three-pointer gave Hibernians the lead, but Lecuyer’s fast-break three and second-chance layups from Napoleon kept Starlites within reach.
Hibernians looked poised to pull away with De Martino and Saliba scoring on fast breaks, but Zammit Cordina’s long-range accuracy kept Starlites alive. Late free throws by Lecuyer tied the game at 39-39, but De Martino’s three-pointer at the buzzer restored a narrow Hibernians lead.
In the final quarter, Starlites’ resilience shone through. Mikayla Brandon hit a three-pointer to extend Hibernians’ lead, but Mikela Riolo and Lecuyer answered with key baskets. Zammit Cordina’s drive shifted momentum, giving Starlites a slim advantage at 55-54. Late efforts from Riolo and Lecuyer sealed the victory before Bonett added late free throws to secure the final score.
