Recap
Caffe Moak Luxol delivered a dominant performance on Saturday to defeat Valletta in the MAPFRE MSV Life Women’s League.
Brandy Huffhines and Josephine Diaby – for whom this was her return from injury – led the charge for the Violets, while Janae Barnes was exceptional for Valletta, amassing a game-high 46 points in a valiant effort.
Luxol set the tone early in the first quarter with Anna Fenech Pace scoring back-to-back baskets to give her side an early lead. Despite a three-pointer from Milica Stefanovic narrowing the gap, Luxol quickly responded with a fast-break layup from Nolene Vella and a three-pointer by Huffhines, opening up a 13-7 lead. Late free throws and a layup by Diaby extended Luxol’s advantage to 23-10 by the end of the quarter.
In the second quarter, Luxol maintained their momentum, with Fenech Pace adding a fast-break three-pointer to reach 11 points. Huffhines continued her impressive shooting, draining another three, while Sarah Pace drove into the paint for crucial baskets. Valletta’s Barnes tried to keep her side in contention, scoring consistently and reaching 20 points by halftime. However, Luxol’s balanced attack gave them a 37-31 lead at the break.
The third quarter saw Luxol pull away decisively. Diaby was unstoppable inside, scoring off turnovers and second-chance opportunities, while Pace and Huffhines contributed key jump shots and free throws. Luxol’s defence tightened, limiting Valletta’s scoring to individual efforts from Barnes, who nevertheless hit a fast-break three-pointer to keep her team within reach. Huffhines and Pace capped the quarter with three-pointers, pushing Luxol to a commanding 62-42 lead.
In the final quarter, Luxol’s depth shone, with Diaby and Rebecca Naudi combining for quick points in transition. While Barnes continued her scoring spree for Valletta, including a stunning fast-break layup and free throws to bring her total to 46 points, it was not enough to counter Luxol’s dominance as late contributions from Naudi and a jumper by Rebecca Fenech Pace sealed the victory.
