Recap
Hibernians seem to have regained their mojo from the opening of the new season as they stunned Caffe Moak Luxol into defeat on Saturday at the Ta’ Qali Pavilion.
Luxol started strong in the opening minutes, with Brandy Huffhines setting the tone early with a three-pointer, capitalising on a turnover to give her team a 3-0 lead. Hibernians responded swiftly through Steffi De Martino, who matched the effort with a three-pointer of her own. Sarah Fenech Pace then took control, scoring a floating jump shot and following it up with a three-pointer and a layup, pushing Luxol to a 10-3 advantage. However, Hibernians narrowed the gap as Mikayla Brandon and De Martino combined with effective inside play. Anna Fenech Pace’s three-pointer for Luxol extended their lead to 15-9 before Hibernians’ Andie Saliba and Brandon chipped away, closing the first quarter at 17-15 in Luxol’s favour.
The second quarter began with momentum swinging towards Hibernians as Jasmine Abela’s three-pointer gave them their first lead at 18-17. Although Josephine Diaby briefly restored Luxol’s advantage, De Martino seized control with an impressive scoring run. A combination of three-pointers and consistent free-throw shooting from De Martino saw Hibernians build a commanding lead. Luxol struggled to contain the offensive barrage, with Brandon and Saliba joining the scoring. By the end of the half, Hibernians led 46-22, as a last-second three-pointer by Naomi Farrugia capped their dominance.
After the break, Luxol attempted to regroup, with Diaby converting a tip-in layup early in the third quarter. However, Hibernians’ relentless offence, spearheaded by De Martino and Brandon, continued to extend the margin. Saliba contributed with a series of fast-break layups, while Anna Fenech Pace and Huffhines tried to respond for Luxol with mid-range jump shots and a three-pointer. Despite their efforts, Hibernians’ lead grew further, and the quarter ended with Luxol trailing 61-31.
In the final quarter, Luxol showed glimpses of resilience, with Huffhines scoring from mid-range and Gwen Carabott adding a floating jump shot. However, Hibernians’ dominance was evident as Julija Dabic and Farrugia executed fast-break plays with precision. While Anna Fenech Pace converted from the free-throw line for Luxol, Hibernians’ depth and efficiency prevailed. Dabic and Buhagiar’s fast-break layups sealed the victory as Hibernians secured a convincing win.
