Recap

Athleta sealed a double over Valletta Lionesses in Sunday’s early game despite Janae Barnes returning to Valletta’s lineup in spectacular form, delivering a game-high 38 points in a valiant effort. Despite her heroics, Athleta secured their second victory over Valletta, and the second overall in the MAPFRE MSV Life Women’s League this season, relying on their balanced scoring and composure in critical moments.

Valletta struck first as Barnes opened with a second-chance three-pointer. Francesca Sant quickly responded for Athleta with a layup, and free throws from Laura Camilleri edged Athleta ahead. Barnes and Sabrina Abugrin worked together to give Valletta the lead, with Abugrin hitting back-to-back jump shots. Athleta’s Kirsty Williams capitalised on turnovers to keep the game close, but Valletta closed the first quarter on a high note. Nicole Caruana’s layup and a Barnes jumper extended Valletta’s lead to 16-9.

In the second quarter, Williams continued to spearhead Athleta’s offence, scoring consistently in transition and from the line. A three-pointer by Sant brought Athleta closer, and soon, Athleta seized the momentum. A crucial three-pointer from Britney Agius put Athleta ahead, and Williams followed with a second-chance jumper, widening the gap. Barnes answered with a three-pointer to narrow the deficit, but Athleta’s defence held firm, closing the half with a slender 29-27 advantage.

The third quarter was a battle of wills, as both teams traded scoring runs. Vella and Agius stretched Athleta’s lead with timely three-pointers. Barnes continued to dominate for Valletta, scoring from the paint and capitalising on second-chance opportunities. A tip-in by Taisiia Nikishina brought Valletta within two, but Athleta responded with fast-break baskets from Williams and Agius, taking a 47-40 lead into the final quarter.

Valletta’s fight intensified in the fourth quarter, with Barnes shouldering the offensive load. She attacked the basket with ferocity, drawing fouls and converting from the line. Caruana’s driving layup and a late Barnes three-pointer cut Athleta’s lead to single digits. However, Williams and Vella maintained Athleta’s composure, combining for crucial free throws in the dying moments. Barnes closed the game with a deep three-pointer, but it wasn’t enough to prevent Athleta’s victory.
