Recap

In a commanding display, Malta secured a decisive 92-52 victory over San Marino during their second game of the FIBA European Small Countries Championships in Andorra, following a narrow 89-81 loss to Gibraltar the previous day. Malta bounced back emphatically, demonstrating exceptional teamwork and skill across all four quarters. Key players such as Samuel Deguara and Alec Felice Pace led the charge, showcasing their determination to excel in the tournament.

Deguara was Malta’s top scorer, dominating inside the paint with multiple dunks and efficient shooting. Felice Pace contributed significantly with precise shooting from beyond the arc and adept playmaking, both pivotal in Malta’s success.

For San Marino, Mathias Cadiman led the scoring charts, displaying versatility with his mid-range and three-point shooting. Francesco Maria Guida was also instrumental, particularly effective from the free-throw line, as both players spearheaded San Marino’s offensive efforts against Malta.

Malta asserted their dominance early in the game, finishing the first quarter with a commanding 23-8 lead. Joshua Tomasi opened Malta’s scoring with free throws, swiftly followed by Nathan Xuereb‘s pivotal three-pointer. Strong defensive efforts by Ian Felice Pace and David Bugeja stifled San Marino’s attempts, while Kurt Xuereb‘s late layup underscored Malta’s control.

In the second quarter, Malta extended their lead to 46-17. Deguara continued his dominant play with multiple offensive rebounds and points in the paint. Malta’s robust defence, led by Bugeja and Matthew Scerri, capitalised on turnovers, limiting San Marino’s scoring opportunities. Despite Matteo Botteghi’s defensive rebounds for San Marino, Malta maintained their advantage.

Starting the third quarter with a 46-17 lead, Malta swiftly added to their tally with Bugeja’s three-pointer. Tomasi and Kurt Cassar contributed crucial points, while Malta’s defence, anchored by Michael Sjoberg and Cassar, thwarted San Marino’s efforts. Despite San Marino’s resilience, including notable contributions from Cadiman and Davide Macina, Malta remained firmly in control, ending the quarter 65-39.

The final quarter saw Malta sustain their dominance, commencing with a 65-39 lead. Alec Felice Pace extended Malta’s advantage early on with a 3-pointer, while Deguara continued to make impactful plays with dunks and jump shots. San Marino fought back with free throws from Leonardo Maria Fiorani and a jump shot by Kevin Riccardi, but Malta’s disciplined defence, bolstered by Deguara’s rebounds, ensured their commanding 92-52 victory.
