Recap

Tigers BT faced a tough challenge against Starlites in their debut in this season’s John Tabone Shield, suffering a heavy defeat, 74-113. Despite some individual standout performances, especially from Jhun Jhun Lisondra and Matthew Brown, Starlites’ well-rounded team effort, led by Joe Davis and Kolten Mortensen, dominated from start to finish.

The game began at a blistering pace with Starlites’ Max Curran making an immediate impact, dunking the ball within the first few seconds. The Tigers responded quickly with a three-pointer from Brown, giving them an early one-point lead. However, Starlites quickly regained control. Curran and Trevon Reddish-Rhone pushed the score to 3-6 with fast break plays, and despite Lisondra briefly levelling the game with a three-pointer, Starlites surged ahead again. A series of layups from Miguel Fabri, along with a commanding 15-point burst in the last two minutes of the quarter, saw Starlites go into the break leading 11-36.

The second quarter was more of the same, with the Tigers struggling to fight back. Davis remained lethal with his drives to the basket, while Mortensen and Matthew Scerri drained key three-pointers to extend the lead further. Lisondra tried to keep his team afloat with a flurry of points, including back-to-back free throws and a three-pointer, but Starlites’ lead continued to increase. A fast break score from Louie Farrugia and relentless defence allowed Starlites to close the half 40 points clear, at 40-68.

Tigers BT showed some signs of life in the third quarter. Lisondra was in fine form, sinking several key shots, including a big three-pointer to cut the deficit to 21 points. Brown also chipped in with crucial baskets from turnovers. However, Starlites’ Curran, Reddish-Rhone, and Davis remained composed, making sure any momentum for Tigers BT was short-lived. Starlites finished the third quarter with a solid 85-59 lead after a series of fast breaks.

In the final quarter, Starlites pressed their advantage, with Mortensen’s shooting proving deadly, hitting three more three-pointers to put the game beyond reach. Tigers BT never gave up, with Brown reaching a personal milestone of 30 points, but Lisondra’s late three-pointer was little more than a consolation as Starlites wrapped up a commanding performance, winning 113-74.
