Recap
Athleta dominated Tigers BT in a one-sided contest in this season’s John Tabone Shield, with a commanding victory. Although both teams were out of the running for semifinal qualification, Athleta approached the game with intensity and purpose, led by a stellar performance from Kurt James, who ended the match with an impressive 43 points.
The Tigers started strongly with a layup from Jhun Jhun Lisondra and a fast-break layup from Matthew Brown, opening up an early 5-0 lead. However, that advantage quickly disappeared as Athleta responded through Caleb Matthews, whose three-pointer kickstarted their offence. James soon found his rhythm, converting multiple fast-break layups to help Athleta build a 15-7 lead. Matthews added another two points from the free throw line, while Robert Vitale’s three-pointer widened the gap further. By the end of the first quarter, Athleta led 30-16, thanks to a last-second fast break from James.
The second quarter saw Athleta extend their lead relentlessly. Matthews and Mirco Azzopardi combined effectively, scoring from fast breaks to push the score to 42-17. James’ highlight-reel dunk off a turnover further demoralised Tigers BT. Despite a three-pointer from Keith Micaller, Athleta’s Juan Cefai Garcia replied with a three-pointer of his own. By the halftime break, Athleta had blown the game wide open, leading 57-33.
In the third quarter, the onslaught continued. Matthews drained another three-pointer, and James dazzled with a reverse layup as Athleta maintained a commanding lead. Tigers had some moments of resistance, with Brown contributing a pair of three-pointers, but Athleta’s defence consistently forced turnovers, resulting in quick points. A three-pointer from James towards the end of the quarter took the score to 77-50, as Athleta refused to let up.
The final quarter was a continuation of Athleta’s dominance. James was unstoppable, adding fast-break layups, tip-ins, and even a fadeaway jumper to take his tally to 41 points. Luca Borg and Andrej Bozanic also got in on the act with fast-break points, and Borg’s consecutive three-pointers sealed the Tigers’ fate. As Athleta reached 120 points, James added the finishing touch with another layup, bringing the final score to 122-64 in favour of Athleta.
