Recap
In their first game back after a long hiatus, Athleta put up a spirited fight, but Starlites, under coach Peter Shoults, proved too strong, securing an 80-61 win in the opening fixture of this year’s Women’s John Tabone Shield. Led by standout performances from Makaila Napoleon and Sasha Lecuyer, Starlites set the tone early, giving Adrian Baldacchino’s Athleta a tough introduction to the league.
The game opened with a scoring blitz from Starlites, with Michela Zammit Cordina sinking two early three-pointers, quickly establishing a 12-3 lead. Lecuyer followed suit, hitting back-to-back threes, extending the advantage. Athleta, under the guidance of Baldacchino in his first official game in charge since moving from Depiro, managed to respond through Nicole Vella and Kennedi Williams, narrowing the gap slightly. However, Starlites’ dominant shooting was too much to handle, and the first quarter ended 32-21 in their favour, with Catherine Cilia adding a late fast break layup.
In the second quarter, Athleta’s resilience showed, as they battled to stay in touch with Starlites. Napoleon continued to impress with her driving layups, keeping the scoreboard moving. Athleta found key contributions from Camila Londono and Vella, but Lecuyer’s lethal three-point shooting ensured Starlites stayed in control. A late three-pointer from Martina Ferrante brought Athleta within one point at 37-36, but Zammit Cordina’s immediate response from beyond the arc ensured Starlites went into the half with a 43-38 lead.
The third quarter saw Starlites take full command, thanks to the combined efforts of Napoleon and Lecuyer. The latter added points from the free-throw line, while Napoleon capitalised on second-chance opportunities. Mikela Riolo also stepped up with seven straight points, further stretching the lead to 62-44 by the end of the quarter. Athleta’s struggles continued as their star player, Williams, added only 10 points during the quarter, unable to spark a comeback.
In the final rubber, Starlites continued to press their advantage. Napoleon added eight more points to her total, finishing the game with 31. Zammit Cordina and Lecuyer rounded off the scoring, with Lecuyer sinking a series of free throws to end the game. Despite a valiant effort from Williams, who finished with 19 points, Athleta couldn’t close the gap, and Starlites cruised to an 80-61 victory.
