Recap

Hibernians edged out Super Cup winners Depiro in a fiercely contested first-round fixture of the Women’s John Tabone Shield, winning 72-67. Both sides put on a strong performance, but it was Hibernians’ Steffi De Martino who led the charge under coach Winnie Buhagiar, while Depiro, guided by Julian Naudi, struggled to maintain their momentum despite a valiant effort from Julia Borg and Kristy Galea.

The opening quarter saw Hibernians off to a quick start, with Mikayla Brandon and De Martino leading the way. Brandon’s fast break layup and subsequent shot put her side 10-3 up early on. Depiro responded through Julia Borg, whose three-point shooting helped narrow the gap to 12-8. Borg’s offensive output, coupled with Leanne Sciberras’ timely shots, kept Depiro within striking distance, but De Martino’s consistent scoring ensured Hibernians ended the quarter with a slim 20-16 lead.

In the second quarter, Depiro came back with more intensity, spearheaded by Sciberras and Galea. Sciberras’ fast break layups shifted the momentum, giving Depiro a 24-22 lead—their first of the game. However, Andie Saliba and De Martino kept Hibernians within range, trading points with Borg and Galea. As the game tightened, Depiro began to pull ahead, pushing their lead to 38-30 thanks to back-to-back shots from Borg and Julia Borg Xerri. Late in the quarter, Jasmine Abela’s three-pointer gave Hibernians some respite, but they still trailed 41-38 at the half.

The third quarter saw Hibernians rally. Despite Borg’s and Galea’s efforts, Hibernians went on a crucial run midway through the period, with De Martino and Bonett combining to take control. Bonett’s back-to-back field goals gave Hibernians a 52-48 lead. De Martino, showing her scoring prowess, pushed Hibernians further ahead with a floating jump shot followed by a layup to make it 61-48 going into the final quarter.

Depiro weren’t done yet. Julia Borg knocked down a three-pointer early in the fourth, sparking a resurgence. Claire Ciantar and Galea added crucial points as Depiro cut the deficit to just two. With two minutes remaining, De Martino nailed a vital three-pointer, extending Hibernians’ lead to 68-63. Though Jensen Caretti returned to the court late after an earlier knock and contributed with a free throw, it wasn’t enough to stop Hibernians, as Abela’s final three-pointer sealed the win for Buhagiar’s team. Despite Galea’s late free throws, Depiro fell short, and Hibernians held on for a hard-fought 72-67 victory.
