Recap

Athleta faced a tough challenge against Caffe Moak Luxol in this John Tabone Shield encounter, where Luxol dominated most of the game, pulling away in the second half for a comprehensive 75-45 victory.

The first quarter began with Athleta’s Laura Camilleri opening the scoring with a driving layup. Luxol, however, responded quickly through Sarah Fenech Pace, who levelled the game with a second-chance layup. Both teams traded baskets early on, with Kennedi Williams and Brandy Lynn Huffhines making key contributions for their sides. Huffhines’ three-pointer midway through the rubber edged Luxol ahead 7-8, but Athleta’s Nicole Vella hit back with a pair of three-pointers, sparking an 11-0 run that saw Athleta take a commanding 19-8 lead with three minutes remaining. Luxol clawed their way back into the game, however, with Anna Fenech Pace’s layup tying the score 21-21 just before the buzzer.

The second quarter saw Luxol gradually pull ahead. Huffhines continued to be a problem for Athleta’s defence, nailing two three-pointers and finishing with 15 points by the half. Despite a Vella three-pointer narrowing the gap to 25-26, Luxol went on a 12-4 scoring run, with key baskets from Anna Fenech Pace and Ella Abela, to close the half with a 43-33 lead.

In the third quarter, Luxol took complete control. Huffhines again opened the scoring, and Athleta struggled to find an answer for her dominance. By the six-minute mark, Luxol had extended their lead to 51-33, with Huffhines reaching 19 points, assisted by strong contributions from Anna Fenech Pace. Athleta’s only response came through Williams’ rare three-pointer and a layup from Michaela Cassar Pickard, but Luxol closed the quarter with a 40-61 lead, thanks to Vanya Baldacchino’s inside presence.

The fourth quarter was all Luxol. Huffhines completed her game-high 21 points with an early layup, while Fenech Pace added to her tally with smooth mid-range jumpers. Athleta’s Camilleri and Vella tried to muster a response, but Luxol’s lead was too big a mountain to climb. A late flurry from Abela and Fenech Pace pushed the final margin to 30 points, sealing an impressive win for Luxol.
