Recap

SiGMA Depiro secured a commanding victory over AtoZ Athleta in a game marked by relentless fast-break opportunities and strong defensive play. While Maxwell Amoafo showcased his scoring versatility for Athleta, it was Depiro’s Brandon Porter and Cameron Cornelius who stole the spotlight with their dynamic contributions.

The game opened with Depiro setting the tone early through Cornelius and Miguel Brincat, whose quick baskets helped build a 4-0 lead. Maxwell Amoafo got Athleta on the board with a fast-break layup, but Depiro responded with a mix of inside play and precision shooting from Porter. Despite Caleb Matthews’ efforts to narrow the gap with his free throws, Depiro’s balanced offence saw them close the first quarter with a slender 22-19 lead.

In the second quarter, Athleta briefly clawed back into the game, with Matthews sinking a crucial three-pointer to pull within one point. However, Depiro’s Cornelius and Porter quickly wrestled back momentum. A series of fast-break dunks and outside shots allowed Depiro to establish a double-digit advantage. Athleta’s Amoafo battled valiantly, adding a series of layups and tip-ins to his tally, but Depiro’s defensive intensity and efficient scoring saw them finish the half leading 45-34.

The third quarter saw Athleta attempt to mount a comeback, with Amoafo’s second-chance points and Kurt James’ steady free-throw shooting keeping the team within striking distance. Depiro, however, proved to be the stronger side. Porter continued to dazzle with a mix of fadeaway jumpers and driving layups, while Cornelius added crucial points in transition. Depiro ended the quarter firmly in control, extending their lead to 61-47.

The final period cemented Depiro’s dominance. Despite Amoafo reaching 22 points through a flurry of free throws and mid-range shots, Depiro’s relentless pace overwhelmed Athleta. Porter’s athleticism was on full display with a series of fast-break dunks, including a spectacular three-point play to seal the outcome. Cornelius capped his impressive performance with a late floating jumper, and David Bugeja’s three-pointer from a turnover added the finishing touches to an emphatic win.
