Recap
Valletta Lions followed their disappointing defeat to Starlites JSD in midweek with a resounding victory over Tigers BT in a high-scoring affair, driven by an exceptional performance from Piotr Stelmach, who delivered a remarkable 56-point game. Despite the absence of US import Eric Terry, Valletta’s balanced offence and relentless pace overwhelmed the Tigers.
The opening quarter saw the Tigers take an early lead through Ishmael Lockamy’s scoring flurry, which included two three-pointers and a series of layups. However, Valletta found their footing with Stelmach leading the charge. His ability to finish inside the paint and convert on second-chance opportunities kept the game tight. Contributions from Nikola Vasovic and Stefan Vincic gave Valletta a slight edge, as they ended the quarter leading 23-22.
In the second quarter, Valletta exploded offensively, with Vasovic and Stelmach spearheading a dominant run. Vasovic’s fast-break points and precision shooting extended Valletta’s lead, while Stelmach capitalised on turnovers and second-chance opportunities. Tigers BT struggled to keep pace, despite Serge Hamparsoumian’s steady scoring from mid-range. By halftime, Valletta had surged ahead 66-52.
The third quarter continued in a similar vein, with Valletta dictating the tempo. Stelmach was unstoppable, scoring effortlessly in the paint and from beyond the arc. Vasovic continued his impressive form, adding to Valletta’s lead with fast-break layups and jumpers. Although Hamparsoumian and debutant Mamish Grubaric kept the Tigers in contention with timely baskets, Valletta’s offence remained relentless, extending their advantage to 90-78 by the end of the period.
The final quarter was a showcase of Valletta’s offensive prowess, as they pulled away decisively. Stelmach sealed his extraordinary performance with a flurry of late three-pointers, while Vasovic continued to dominate in transition. The Tigers showed resilience, with Hamparsoumian finishing with 39 points and Grubaric adding crucial second-chance baskets, but the gap proved insurmountable. Valletta closed the game with a commanding 139-118 victory.
