Recap

Title-holders Starlites JSD cruised past Tigers BT on Sunday in their final 2024 fixture at the Ta’ Qali Pavilion.

The Tigers opened the game with a balanced offensive effort, highlighted by Israel Lockamy’s scoring efficiency and Serge Hamparsoumian’s jump shots. Starlites’ Trevon Reddish-Rhone responded with relentless attacks in the paint, capitalising on second chances and fast breaks.

Keith Micaller and Lockamy’s three-pointers gave Tigers a slim lead, but Max Curran’s consistent finishing inside kept Starlites close. Nevertheless Tigers held a narrow 28-25 lead at the end of the first quarter.

The second quarter saw Curran dominate for Starlites, scoring repeatedly from second chances and fast breaks to tilt the momentum in their favour. Despite Tigers’ efforts, led by Hamparsoumian’s inside scoring and Lockamy’s accuracy from deep, Starlites surged ahead with contributions from Matthew Scerri and Reddish-Rhone. Curran’s ability to exploit turnovers and control the paint widened Starlites’ advantage to 55-44 by halftime.

In the third quarter, the Tigers attempted to rally behind Lockamy’s long-range shooting and Hamparsoumian’s persistence inside. However, Paul Ferrante’s Starlites maintained their dominance with Curran adding more points from turnovers and Reddish converting fast breaks with ease. David Costantino’s three-pointer briefly energised Tigers, but Kolten Mortensen and Reddish-Rhone combined for a decisive run, stretching the lead to 85-65 by the end of the quarter.

The fourth quarter was a continuation of Starlites’ control, with Mortensen showcasing his versatility by scoring in transition and off turnovers. Tigers struggled to keep pace despite a spirited effort from Hamparsoumian and Costantino. Late contributions from Matthew Fabri and Andrew Aquilina extended Starlites’ lead even further, sealing a comprehensive victory.
