Recap

SiGMA Depiro ended the calendar year with a victory as they beat Valletta Lions on Sunday at the Ta’ Qali Pavilion.

The Capital club began the game with Eric Terry asserting himself early in the paint, securing a layup and following it with a second-chance tip-in. However, Depiro quickly responded, with Cameron Cornelius showing his scoring range by hitting a three-pointer after an initial jump shot.

Valletta regained a slim lead through Nikola Vasovic’s fast-break jumper, but Depiro capitalised on turnovers, with Brandon Porter’s dunk sparking a momentum shift. A sharp three-pointer by Nikola Bozovic pushed Depiro ahead, and despite Piotr Stelmach’s five consecutive points for Valletta, Depiro closed the quarter strongly, holding a 24-17 advantage.

The second quarter saw Terry’s steady free-throw shooting keep Valletta within reach, but Depiro’s balance and depth shone through. Bozovic and Cornelius remained relentless, both scoring off second chances, while Dom Tomasi and Miguel Brincat chipped in with crucial baskets. Stelmach carried Valletta’s offence, connecting from the free-throw line and inside the paint to narrow the gap to six points before halftime, with Depiro leading 38-32.

In the third quarter, Depiro extended their lead with Cornelius dominating in the paint and Porter adding points from turnovers. Stelmach continued his outstanding performance for Valletta, responding with layups and a three-pointer to cut the deficit. Despite his efforts, Brincat and Bozovic countered with efficient scoring, giving Depiro a 55-48 advantage heading into the final quarter.

The fourth quarter opened with Terry and Stelmach providing Valletta a glimmer of hope, combining for quick baskets. However, Depiro’s Brincat hit back-to-back three-pointers, and Bozovic sank another from deep, widening the margin. Cornelius sealed Depiro’s dominance, adding free throws and a driving layup. Late in the game, Stefan Vincic added some spark for Valletta with a three-pointer and free throws, but Porter and Cornelius ensured Depiro’s lead was unassailable.
