Recap
AtoZ Athleta showcased their dominance against Tigers BT with a commanding performance that saw them lead throughout the game as the league minnows remain the only team without a win this season.
The game opened with Kurt James setting the tone, scoring with a fast-break dunk and free throws to establish an early advantage. Tigers’ new boy Kendall Jordan kept his team in contention with consistent trips to the free-throw line, but James’s relentless scoring, including layups and a tip-in, gave Athleta a 21-11 lead at the end of the first quarter.
The second quarter followed a similar pattern, as Caleb Matthews came alive with a series of three-pointers, pushing Athleta’s lead further. Maxwell Amoafo’s fast-break finishes and inside presence added to the Tigers’ woes. Jordan answered with a three-pointer and driving layups, while Albert Varcallo’s outside shooting provided brief moments of respite for the Tigers. Despite these efforts, Athleta extended their lead to 51-31 by halftime, with James and Matthews orchestrating their offence.
The third quarter saw coach Sandro Farrugia’s Athleta maintain their intensity. James continued his strong performance with fast-break dunks and tip-ins, while Amoafo added to his tally with efficient finishes in the paint. Tigers’ Darko Mitrovic contributed with second-chance points, and Jordan found success from beyond the arc, but the gap remained insurmountable. Varcallo’s three-pointer and driving layups gave the Tigers fleeting momentum, but Athleta closed the quarter leading 77-49.
In the final quarter, Athleta’s control remained unchallenged. Matthews added to his scoring with layups from turnovers, and Amoafo’s fast-break dunks brought the crowd to their feet. Spiteri’s outside jump shots further emphasised Athleta’s depth. Tigers’ Jordan fought valiantly, adding free throws and layups to his tally, reaching 20 points by the end of the game. However, Athleta’s balanced attack and relentless pace secured a dominant victory.
