Recap

Starlites JSD and Hibernians delivered a fiercely competitive encounter. Both teams exchanged scoring runs and momentum shifts throughout the game, but it was the league leaders who took the win against the title holders.

The game began with Hibernians’ Derek Brown sinking an early three-pointer, followed by Ivan Demcesen’s layup, giving them a quick 5-0 advantage. Starlites responded with a layup from Kurt Xuereb and contributions from Matthew Scerri, but Tedrick Wolfe’s dunk and Brown’s second three-pointer kept the visitors ahead. Trevon Reddish-Rhone then sparked a comeback for Starlites, scoring seven consecutive points, including a free throw, to tie the game at 11-11. Late baskets from Ian Felice Pace and Scerri gave Starlites a slim 18-15 lead before Wolfe levelled the score with a three-pointer at the buzzer.

The second quarter saw Reddish-Rhone and Demcesen take centre stage, with the former scoring consistently in the paint and the latter dominating inside with floating jump shots and layups. Reddish-Rhone’s dunk and free throw briefly restored Starlites’ lead, but Wolfe’s fast-break layups and free throws kept the Paolites within striking distance. Max Curran’s timely three-pointer extended Starlites’ advantage, but Demcesen’s jump shot closed the gap to 41-36 at halftime.

The third quarter was a back-and-forth battle. Starlites’ Reddish-Rhone continued to shine with a series of dunks and jump shots, while Curran and Scerri added vital free throws to maintain the lead. Hibs’ Brown responded with a three-pointer and a driving layup, gradually narrowing the deficit. Late in the quarter, Wolfe and Brown combined for crucial free throws, bringing Hibernians to within one point. However, Reddish-Rhone’s final dunk ensured the Naxxar side entered the final quarter with a slender 56-55 lead.

In the fourth quarter, Demcesen and Brown led Hibernians’ charge, with Demcesen’s layups and tip-ins proving pivotal. Brown’s free throws and Attard’s three-pointer gave the Paolites a significant lead midway through the quarter. Starlites’ Reddish-Rhone attempted to rally his team with consecutive layups and free throws, but Hibs’ composure at the line, highlighted by Demcesen’s and Attard’s accuracy, secured their victory. Despite a late three-pointer from Felice Pace and Scerri’s jumper, Starlites fell short, with the leaders clinching the game.
