Recap

Betsson Depiro made an impressive statement in their game against Starlites, securing a victory that propelled them to the top of the MAPFRE MSV Life Women’s League standings on Saturday.

Early on, the game was tightly contested, with Depiro’s Janai Crooms and Starlites’ Sasha Lecuyer trading impactful plays. Crooms dominated in the paint, while Lecuyer found success from long range, contributing a crucial three-pointer. Claire Ciantar’s floating jump shot gave Depiro an early edge, but Starlites answered back, led by the sharpshooting of Philippa Riolo, whose second-chance three-pointer brought her side within striking distance. Depiro closed the quarter with a slim 21-14 advantage.

The second quarter saw the momentum shift as Starlites clawed their way back. Riolo and Makaila Napoleon showcased their scoring prowess, combining for a flurry of points that momentarily gave Starlites the lead. However, Depiro’s resilience shone through with Crooms spearheading a comeback alongside Joselle Borg Cardona, who capitalised on turnovers with quick layups. A late surge from Napoleon and Lecuyer ensured Starlites stayed competitive, but Crooms’ consistency in transition helped Depiro edge the quarter. At the half, Starlites clung to a narrow 37-35 lead.

In the third quarter, Crooms turned up the intensity, scoring repeatedly in the paint and contributing to second-chance opportunities. While Lecuyer and Riolo kept Starlites in contention, the quarter belonged to Depiro’s interior play. Ciantar’s driving layups and Borg Cardona’s timely tip-ins bolstered Depiro’s momentum. Starlites briefly regained the lead through Napoleon’s attacking drives, but Crooms, relentless on fast breaks, closed the quarter with a sequence of layups that gave Depiro a 54-48 lead heading into the final period.

The fourth quarter was a showcase of Depiro’s composure and depth. Crooms continued her dominant inside presence, amassing 34 points by the game’s end. Ciantar added crucial layups to keep Depiro’s lead intact, while Starlites’ Michaela Zammit Cordina sparked a late rally with a combination of a three-pointer and a layup off a turnover. Lecuyer’s three-pointer in the final seconds brought Starlites close, but Depiro’s balanced offence and defensive rebounding secured the win.
