Recap

Caffe Moak Luxol rebounded emphatically from last week’s disappointment with a dominant 83-48 victory over Athleta in the MAPFRE MSV Life Women’s League. A blistering first quarter saw Luxol establish an unassailable 21-point lead, setting the tone for a comprehensive performance on both ends of the court.

Sarah Fenech Pace got Luxol off to a perfect start, scoring on a turnover-induced jumper and a fast-break layup. Brandy Lynn Huffhines added momentum with a well-timed three-pointer, and Josephine Diaby’s consistent presence in the paint extended the lead. By the midway point of the first quarter, Luxol’s defensive intensity and fast-break efficiency had overwhelmed Athleta, who trailed 13-0. Despite Nicole Vella and Francesca Sant breaking the deadlock with crucial baskets, Luxol’s offensive onslaught, led by Huffhines and Fenech Pace, closed the quarter at 28-7.

Athleta sought to recover in the second quarter, with Kelsey Abela contributing from the line and Julia Cipriott providing valuable points from mid-range. However, Luxol maintained their grip on the game. Vanya Baldacchino and Huffhines continued to score effectively, while Diaby dominated second-chance opportunities in the paint. A late surge from Athleta, highlighted by contributions from Kennedi Williams, managed to trim the deficit slightly, but Luxol still held a commanding 48-17 lead at halftime.

The third quarter saw Athleta’s Sant step up with back-to-back scores, including a three-pointer that briefly halted Luxol’s momentum. However, Diaby and Huffhines responded in kind, with Huffhines adding her fourth three-pointer of the game. Baldacchino and Rebecca Naudi chipped in with efficient scoring, while Luxol’s defence limited Athleta’s opportunities. By the end of the third period, Roderick Vella’s Luxol side had extended their lead to 71-31.

In the final quarter, Kennedi Williams gave a spirited performance for Athleta, contributing nine points in the period, including a pull-up three-pointer. However, Luxol continued to dominate the game’s tempo, with late contributions from Michela Marmara and Naudi ensuring a strong finish. Despite Athleta’s efforts, the gulf in class remained evident as Luxol cruised to a 35-point victory.
