Recap

Starlites delivered a commanding performance against Valletta Lionesses, cruising to victory in the MAPFRE MSV Life Women’s League. The win marked Starlites’ fourth triumph of the season, consolidating their playoff ambitions while leaving Valletta winless and struggling at the bottom of the standings.

The game began with Michela Zammit Cordina firing from the perimeter, sinking two early three-pointers to give Starlites a 6-0 lead. Freescoring Makaila Napoleon extended the advantage with a strong layup in the paint, while Ylenia Bonett capitalised on turnovers with efficient scoring under the basket. Valletta responded through Aleksandra Nikishina and Janae Barnes, whose efforts trimmed the deficit to two points late in the quarter. However, Philippa Riolo’s three-pointer swung momentum back in Starlites’ favour, giving them a 16-10 lead at the end of the first quarter.

In the second quarter, Starlites began to pull away. Catherine Cilia and Riolo hit crucial shots, while Napoleon continued to dominate in transition, adding to her tally with precise finishing. Valletta’s Milica Stefanovic and Barnes tried to keep their side within striking distance, but Starlites’ defensive intensity created repeated turnovers. Late contributions from Samantha Tabone and Bonett further widened the gap, giving Starlites a commanding 34-21 advantage at halftime.

The third quarter saw Valletta briefly rally, with Stefanovic connecting on a three-pointer and Barnes driving effectively to the rim. However, Ylenia Ferrando and Napoleon reasserted control for Starlites, combining for a series of key baskets that stifled Valletta’s momentum. Ferrando’s free throws and mid-range jumpers were particularly impactful, while Napoleon’s energy on both ends of the floor pushed the lead to double digits. The quarter ended emphatically, with Philippa Riolo and Mikela Riolo combining for five quick points to close out the period 61-37.

The final quarter showcased Starlites’ depth as they continued to stretch their lead. Napoleon capped off her top-drawer performance with second-chance baskets and clinical free-throw shooting, finishing as the game’s top scorer. Philippa Riolo and Cilia added to Valletta’s woes with sharp shooting in transition, while the defence held firm to keep Valletta’s scoring opportunities limited. Despite late efforts from Barnes, who worked tirelessly to lead Valletta’s offence, Starlites’ dominant all-around display ensured a resounding victory.
