Recap

Starlites secured a hard-fought victory over Hibernians on Saturday, riding on their strong first-quarter performance and clutch plays in the closing moments.

The game began with Hibernians taking an early lead through former Starlites player Steffi De Martino’s jumper, but Starlites quickly responded with a layup and free throw from Mikela Riolo. Makaila Napoleon took control, scoring a three-pointer and later converting free throws to push Starlites ahead. Despite a three-pointer from Mikayla Brandon for Hibernians, Napoleon’s relentless scoring – including another three-pointer – helped Starlites finish the quarter with a commanding 21-10 lead.

Hibernians rallied in the second quarter with contributions from Julija Dabic and De Martino, but Starlites maintained their edge through Napoleon’s continued dominance and a timely three-pointer from Sacha Lecuyer. Hibernians clawed back late in the quarter with Dabic scoring consistently inside the paint, narrowing the deficit to 33-26 at halftime.

The third quarter saw both teams trading baskets, with Napoleon continuing to shine for Starlites. Ylenia Bonett capitalised on second-chance opportunities, while Riolo’s fast-break layup extended their lead. Hibernians’ Dabic and Brandon kept their side within striking distance, and by the end of the quarter, the score stood at 44-41, setting up a thrilling finale.

Hibernians tied the game early in the fourth quarter through De Martino’s three-pointer, but Napoleon’s tip-in and Catherine Cilia’s long-range effort swung momentum back in Starlites’ favour. Bonett added a crucial three-pointer, and Cilia followed up with a fast-break layup to establish a 10-point lead. However, Hibernians refused to back down, with Dabic and Brandon combining to trim the gap to just one point in the final seconds. Nonetheless, Napoleon sealed the game at the free-throw line, securing a narrow victory.
