Recap

Depiro displayed a commanding performance against Athleta in this round’s Sunday’s game at the Ta’ Qali Pavilion, showcasing their dominance early and maintaining control throughout the game.

The first quarter began with Kristy Galea converting a three-pointer, setting the tone for Depiro’s sharp shooting. Athleta responded with layups from Nicole Vella, briefly taking the lead, but Depiro quickly reclaimed control. Julia Borg Xerri and Galea capitalised on fast-break opportunities, while Claire Ciantar’s work in the paint extended the lead. Depiro ended the quarter ahead 17-10, with Galea already making a significant impact.

Depiro’s momentum carried into the second quarter, with Ciantar scoring consistently inside and Nicole Agius adding a three-pointer. Leanne Duncan contributed from midrange, and Galea continued to punish Athleta’s turnovers. The league newcomers found limited scoring through Francesca Sant and Kennedi Williams, but Julian Naudi’s Depiro pushed their advantage to 37-16 at halftime.

The third quarter saw no let-up from Depiro, as Ciantar and Galea further widened the gap. Agius connected on another three-pointer, and Borg Xerri found success in transition. Williams fought valiantly for Athleta, scoring both inside and from long range, but Depiro’s lead was insurmountable, standing at 50-28 heading into the final quarter.

In the fourth quarter, Depiro kept control, with Agius converting fast-break points and Borg Xerri continuing to capitalise on Athleta’s mistakes. Williams led Athleta’s late push, scoring 23 points in total, including a series of layups and free throws. Despite her efforts, Depiro’s depth and efficiency, bolstered by standout performances from Galea and Ciantar, proved decisive. Depiro closed the game with a comfortable victory.
