Recap
Betsson Depiro reclaimed the top spot in the MAPFRE MSV Life Women’s League with a commanding performance and victory against Athleta on Sunday. A powerful display by Janai Crooms proved decisive, as her relentless scoring and control in the paint anchored Depiro’s efforts throughout the game.
The first quarter saw Depiro establish their dominance early, led by Crooms, who opened the scoring with a tip-in layup. She followed up with a floating jump shot and added two free throws to build an early 6-0 lead. Athleta managed to respond with a fast-break jump shot from Laura Camilleri, but Depiro’s defence and transition game kept the pressure on. Kristy Galea extended the advantage with a well-executed three-pointer, and Crooms continued to shine with another series of layups and free throws. By the end of the quarter, Depiro had surged ahead, leading 27-9, with Crooms accounting for 16 points.
Athleta attempted to rally in the second quarter, with Martina Ferrante hitting a three-pointer to narrow the gap. Kennedi Williams contributed steadily from the free-throw line and the paint, helping her team cut the deficit to 12 points midway through the period. However, Depiro’s bench provided crucial support, as Hannah Farag and Julia Borg added key points to maintain their advantage. Despite Ferrante’s and Williams’ efforts, Depiro closed the half leading 42-24, thanks to Galea’s sharpshooting and a strong defensive stand.
The third quarter highlighted Depiro’s depth and resilience. Crooms picked up where she left off, adding a series of layups and free throws to her tally. Athleta’s Francesca Sant briefly provided a spark with a jump shot and two free throws, but Depiro’s transition play continued to cause problems. Galea’s timely three-pointer and another layup from Crooms extended the lead to 61-39 by the end of the quarter, effectively putting the game out of reach.
In the final quarter, Depiro’s control remained unchallenged. Crooms surpassed the 30-point mark with a series of composed finishes in the paint, while Sciberras and Galea capitalised on turnovers to further punish Athleta. Although Athleta’s late efforts, including a three-pointer from Nicole Agius, narrowed the margin slightly, it was not enough to overcome Depiro’s commanding lead. The game concluded with Depiro firmly in control, underscoring their title credentials.
