Recap

Hibernians outpaced Starlites in a thrilling semifinal on Sunday at the Ta’ Qali Pavilion, taking the victory and advancing to the John Tabone Shield final.

The first quarter began with Hibernians seizing control, building a 6-0 lead through early efforts from Derek Brown, Matthew Gouder, and Tedrick Wolfe. Starlites retaliated, however, as Joe Davis and Trevon Reddish-Rhone capitalised on turnovers to narrow the score. A sharp three-pointer by Max Curran and another from Andrew Aquilina edged Starlites ahead, but Wolfe’s powerful alley-oop dunk in the final seconds regained Hibernians the lead. A late pair of free throws from Davis left Starlites narrowly ahead, 18-17, by the end of the quarter.

Wolfe continued his dominant form into the second quarter, floating in a smooth jump shot to level the score. Ivan Demcesen then added from the line, pushing Hibernians ahead, while Reddish-Rhone answered with a jump shot to keep Starlites within reach. Wolfe’s driving layup and Demcesen’s second-chance scoring provided Hibernians with a four-point cushion. Curran’s scoring efforts brought Starlites level again, but Hibernians edged the half with a narrow 36-35 advantage after a final free throw from Wolfe.

Reddish-Rhone ignited the third quarter for Starlites, scoring back-to-back layups and a forceful dunk, establishing a five-point lead. Hibernians swiftly responded, with Wolfe sinking a three-pointer to keep the game close. Demcesen’s rebounding presence paid off, as he collected second-chance points and free throws to reclaim the lead for Hibernians at 51-46 by the end of the quarter.

In the final quarter, Hibernians extended their lead through a three-pointer from Gouder and a timely shot from Matthew Attard, giving them a ten-point advantage. Wolfe’s athleticism continued to shine, with a show-stopping fast-break dunk widening the margin to 13. Despite late-game three-pointers from Curran, Mortensen, and Kurt Xuereb, Wolfe’s composure at the free-throw line kept Starlites at bay. In the closing seconds, Wolfe and Brown combined for key free throws, sealing an 83-71 win.
