Recap

Luxol continued their unbeaten run in the John Tabone Shield on Sunday, defeating Depiro 78-69 in a closely contested semifinal at the Ta’ Qali Pavilion. This match showcased the relentless scoring power of Luxol’s Darron Howard and the tactical grit of Depiro, who fought to stay within reach for most of the game.

The first quarter set the tone with a swift response by Howard after Depiro’s Cameron Cornelius opened the scoring with a pull-up jumper. Luxol built momentum through Caleb Jones McCrary, who took charge with second-chance points together with a driving layup and free throws, pushing Luxol ahead to an 8-2 lead. Depiro’s Dominic Tomasi narrowed the margin, but Jones McCrary and Howard retaliated to close the quarter at 20-13, securing Luxol a seven-point advantage.

Jones McCrary’s impact continued into the second quarter, with a pair of fast-break free throws widening the gap to nine. Depiro’s David Bugeja fought back with consistent scoring, cutting Luxol’s lead to 26-21 midway through the period. Howard then shot back with a three-pointer, quickly followed by another floating jump shot that extended Luxol’s lead to seven once more. Though Cornelius sank a three-pointer, Howard and Jones McCrary’s offensive prowess kept Luxol ahead 41-32 by halftime.

The third quarter was another showcase for Howard’s scoring ability, who converted layups off fast breaks and second chances, raising his total to 23. Nathan Xuereb’s timely three-pointer gave Luxol a 48-35 lead, their largest of the game. Despite a resilient response from Depiro’s Bozovic, who chipped in with a three-pointer of his own, Luxol closed the third quarter in control, leading 56-45.

The final quarter saw Depiro press Luxol’s defence, with Tomasi sinking a three and Barrs securing points in the paint, narrowing Luxol’s lead to single digits. But Luxol held their composure, with Jones McCrary’s tip-in and Howard’s final three-pointer sealing Depiro’s fate. Cornelius and Bugeja’s free throws kept Depiro within striking distance until the last minute, but late free throws from Vukasin Jandric and a fast-break layup at the buzzer clinched the win for Luxol, closing at 78-69.
