Recap

In a tense semifinal matchup of the Women’s John Tabone Shield, Luxol emerged victorious over Depiro, securing their place in the final.

The game opened with Brandy Lynn Huffhines putting Luxol on the board first with a three-pointer, quickly followed by a fast-break layup from Sarah Pace.

Luxol raced to a 7-0 lead before Depiro found their footing with a jump shot from Claire Ciantar. Despite Depiro’s efforts, Luxol’s efficient scoring kept them ahead, finishing the first quarter 20-14.

Early in the second quarter, Luxol capitalised on Depiro’s turnovers with Anna Fenech Pace adding a critical tip-in. Depiro responded with a layup from Kristy Galea and a mid-range shot from Jasmine Mallia, closing the gap to just three points at 22-19.

Luxol’s Vanya Baldacchino extended the lead with a smooth three-pointer, but Julia Borg Xerri answered right back for Depiro with a shot from deep. As the half drew to a close, Huffhines powered through with another three-pointer, sending Luxol into the halftime break up by five at 30-27.

The third quarter saw Depiro edge closer and even briefly take the lead, thanks to a scoring burst from Galea, who scored off consecutive turnovers. With the score at 32-34 in Depiro’s favour, Pace and Huffhines responded with back-to-back jump shots to regain control for Luxol. Huffhines capitalised further from the free-throw line, extending the lead to 38-34. The battle remained close, with Depiro’s Galea firing back with a three-pointer to stay within two. However, Luxol finished the quarter strong with Ella Abela’s layup and crucial free throws from Huffhines, holding a six-point lead at 51-45.

In the final quarter, Luxol’s defensive tenacity and fast-break efficiency shone. Lisa Fenech Pace scored on a turnover and was shortly joined by her sister Anna, who added a steady mid-range jumper to extend the lead to eight. Despite Galea’s continued push for Depiro with timely drives, Luxol kept the upper hand as Huffhines stayed composed at the line, closing the game by converting on multiple free throws in the final seconds. Luxol held off Depiro’s final attempts and wrapped up a well-deserved 67-56 win, with Huffhines topping the scoresheet at 21 points.
